The Mayans called cacao “the food of the gods”. Along with its rich history of ritualistic and medicinal use, cacao’s crown jewel is theobromine: a gentle, long lasting stimulant that energises us like caffeine, without punishing us with brain-fog and jittery hands later in the day. It’s also rich in essential minerals and produces mood-boosting bioactive compounds - dopamine, serotonin, anandamide (the 'bliss molecule') and P.E.A, an antidepressant also known as the 'love drug'.

INGREDIENTS:
- 2-3 Tbs Soma Cacao
- 110 mL hot water
- 50 mL milk (we like oat milk)
- 1-2 tsps sweetener (honey, coconut sugar, or maple syrup work great)
METHOD:
Blend all ingredients together using a blender, milk-frother, or whisk. Inhale, sip slowly, and savour!
Cacao powder (or cocoa powder) has undergone intensive processing to extract cacao butter from the paste. This leaves the cacao chalkier and more insipid, and also reduces the fat content, which is vital for the transmission of the neuro-active substances. Studies have proven the widely used method to produce cocoa powder (dutch-processing) significantly decreases the levels of compounds with positive physiological effects.
Our cacao contains the entire cacao bean (excluding the husk/shell). We add nothing, we take nothing away, maintaining the highest concentration of antioxidants, essential minerals, and bliss-inducing compounds.
As an energy source cacao feels more gentle, long-lasting and smooth, while coffee is intense, fast-acting and short-lived. This is because caffeine is a nervous system stimulant, and it produces cortisol, the stress hormone, which can lead to the jitters and anxiety. By contrast, cacao's active ingredient, theobromine, reduces cortisol. This helps us to relax. Cacao also stimulates the cardiovascular system, and opens our blood vessels. This helps blood flow more freely, sends more oxygen through the body, and lowers our blood pressure. We’ve elaborated on this in a recent blog post.

Before this I was using Cacao Powder from the grocery store, and I’ll never be going back, Soma Cacao it’s much more tasty and enjoyable! I didn’t know what I was missing!

The cacao is incredibly high quality, and being whole bean compared to just the powder makes a world of a difference. I've been trying different cacaos for a while now but none compare to these! They also stock a great range of complementary powders, like maca and camu camu, at great prices- recommend experimenting with these for different flavours & nutrition. The range of items from Rainforest Dreaming is also a great compliment for those in the space, personally loved the incense block!

I’ve been interested in trying out cacao for a while, and the starter packs gave me good selection to explore and experience!
As a health conscious family we were aware of the health benefits of Cacao. We tried a few different brands but after purchasing the SOMA cacao starter pack we found our bliss. This is now our go-to first thing in the morning, replacing our coffee, and we add it to smoothies. It is also fantastic in deserts. When travelling we bring hot water and the portable blender. Cheaper and more nutritious than takeaway coffee!
Me and my partner love cacao & have been looking for a brand with values rooted in sustainability and fairness. Then we came across Soma Cacao and after reading their website we decided to try a few different types of cacao before we commit to one big bag. We ordered the choice of three and absolutely loved it (also just missed the restock of the Mexican cacao that we wanted to try the most - damn!). It was really beautiful to discover all the different flavours and tones in each one. The only thing that is hard is to pick just one for our next order!

So far, I have tried the Peruvian cacao and it was delicious. Easy to prepare once I got myself organised and worked out the right strength for me. Ordering was east and delivery was fast and efficient with my package arriving in excellent condition. I can’t wait to try the next one!
I bought a 3 pack, Daintree, karkar and Peruvian. At first I thought I didn't like it but I just needed to make it differently. I use just steamed milk and a dash of vanilla syrup. It's so delicious it's been consuming all my thoughts all day
Everyday just thinking about the next time I can make it. In love with this. Daintree is my favourite so far. Also I moved to cacao as I'm pregnant and I've gone off coffee but cacao is here to stay
